Haircut Update: Exiting ‘Natalie Portman,’ Entering ‘Jean Seberg’

Since I so painstakingly documented my transformation to short-haired Laura, I thought I should update y’all, because I know you’re so interested. “Please, Laura,” I can hear you begging, “show us your sultry locks!” Well, all right.

Here’s what it looked like when I first cut it (see Laura Gets a Haircut for more pictures):

There are many negative connotations with haircuts this short. Let me put it this way: I got called ‘Britney’ a lot during this stage. Though Demi Moore and Sigourney Weaver also came up.

I insisted I looked like Natalie Portman, and that she had made baldness cool.

Natalie Portman

Nobody listened to me. So I would sigh and listen to the same Britney jokes and quietly plot my revenge.

It was also a fun time. The breeze caressing my nearly-bald scalp as I walked down the hallway or the street, the two seconds it took to wash, and the fact that I was in a wedding (Liz and I were bridesmaids) and didn’t have to do anything to my hair, nay, couldn’t. It was a simple time, an innocent time.

But now I have come to a stage where I can wear headbands and other such hair accessories without looking like a total douche, and to where I can finally see how it might one day grow into a real haircut. I like to call this the Jean Seberg stage. Observe!

Only time will tell what weird haircuts I’ll have to get over the next few months, during that awkward growing-out stage, or as I call it, the Shitty Haircut stage. Rest assured, folks, Liz and Laura will keep you posted! Well, probably just Laura.

Another good example of the Jean Seberg haircut can be seen here ( http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMTk1MzQwMzExOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwNDk0NzA3._V1._SX266_SY400_.jpg )

It’s Jenny Schechter (Mia Kirshner) from The L Word, and in the last season she literally referred to her “Jean Seberg stage” with this haircut.

I guess I never did write any future updates, but the growing out was awkward as I predicted. I used a lot of gel and headbands, and eventually I fashioned a sort of bob with bangs, and then I grew everything out, bangs and all. The hardest part was early on, when my hair would stick straight up unevenly, and I was continuously trimming it to even it out. But now I’m THIS close to being able to wear a ponytail. Thrilling!
